Letter from the president:
May 2nd, 2016
Dear IABC/SC Members, I know it wasn’t my idea, but I can’t remember who deserves credit. A couple of years ago, I tried to stop asking “what should we do” and instead ask “what could we do.” The simple change of a couple letters can have a transformative effect when you are building a team and tackling almost any project. Seriously, pause 5 seconds and ask yourself — what could I do next weekend, instead of what should I do next weekend.
Could vs. should has been on my mind a lot since I watched a Ted Talk on procrastination as a guest at the Columbia Main Street Rotary lunch last week. In “surprising habits of original thinkers,” Adam Grant detailed research that reveals a bell curve where some procrastination can actually lead to increased creativity.
I’ve always had a problem with procrastination. At first it was because my father wouldn’t allow it. For more than a decade as an adult, television newsroom deadlines wouldn’t allow it. But, it’s time for a change. I will make it a point to procrastinate. Just a little.
Before each instance of my purposeful procrastination, I’m going to ask myself: What should could we do?
